In the last post I explained how to use email copy to recommend good products to your friends and family, in this post, I will explain how to refer a product in a forum. Again, you should not spam in any circumstances, the pre-condition for you to refer a product from time to time in forums is that you’ve been an active discussion participant all the time, and you’ve been answering people’s questions, trying to help, and contributing ideas or contents to the forum(s).

Only if you are already an active forum participant, you will gain some legitimacy to refer products in the following circumstances.

Circumstance #1, when other people ask a direct question about your experience of certain products. For example, if a person asks:”which internet telephony provider offers good rates to call US and Canada?”, then it is legitimate for you to say: check this company out, they offer $0.015/min to call US and Canada, I’ve been using it for 2 years and so far so happy…”. Notice there is an affiliate link in your answer, but you truly like Vbuzzer and you are helping him with an answer. This is what people call legitimate referrals.

Circumstance #2, when other people ask a question about which product to choose from a bunch of similar products, you can write a review as objective as you can, and within the product review, you can insert your affiliate ID of one or multiple products. A: You can choose X with these pros and cons… Y with these pros and cons… and Z with these pros and cons… I’ve been using this for a while and really liked its combination of price, quality and stability etc… Notice that you’ve embedded an affiliate link for the product you recommend.

Circumstance #3, you don’t refer a product with direct questions and answers, instead, you just participate in forum discussions as usual, on any topics that interest you. And you just make a signature file at the end of every posts, this way, you are can join any forums of your interests, and dedicate to the topics, without the need of referring a irrelevant products. But since you establish your authority in certain topics, people may want to click through your signature files to find out what interest you. A typical signature file looks like the followings.

You may ask: is forum still a good place to refer a product? Yes it is! It is still the most powerful place for people to hang around and have interactive discussions on any topic, including product offers, discount info, etc. People like to receive valuable information and share experience with others, as long as you truly like something and provide quality recommendations, you will be well respected in the online spaces.

Actually, forum is going into its 2.0 version now, and people call it “social media”, in the next post I will explain what is social media, and how you can leverage it to your benefit.

Internet marketing techniques are easy, as they are developed to leverage the average users online activities to get the messages out there. Can you write emails? Yes? Can you ask and answer questions in a forums? Yes? Can you write a short piece sharing your experience with a product you have used? Yes? Then I can tell you that you have all the basic skills to do affiliate marketing.

Before I share some basic techniques with you, I want to make one thing absolutely clear:

DO NOT SPAM

You should not go to any user groups and just spam there. Do you like spams yourself? If your answer is no, don’t do it to others. You should always contribute to the user groups, and only when the topics are relevant, and when your advice/opinions do give good tips, you are then in a position to recommend a product.

Once we set our lines clear,  we can talk about the methods of  promoting a product that you truly like.

Method #1 Email Copy

Surprisingly easy? Yes it is. You probably are sending tens of emails on a daily basis anyway, in these emails you can embed a P.S section with something like: “I’ve used this software for a while and think it is cool, if you are seeking a good pc to phone calling software as well, I highly recommend you to give this one a try.”

When your friends clicks on the link above, s/he will be landed in Vbuzzer homepage but with an affiliate hop link “aid=chrisnano”, if your pals really like what he sees and purchased Vbuzzer Credit, you will be credited a small portion of his payment too.

I use an example account “chrisnano”, you should replace it with your own affiliate account ID.

Another way, probably more natural and effective, is to insert a signature file in every email you send out. This way you don’t even need to explicitly recommend any product, people will notice your signature file and will probably follow through the link you’ve inserted in it. Now let’s talk more about affiliate program, I will focus on the affiliate program that is intended to target internet users - internet affiliate program. Usually it has the following elements:

1. The tracking ID offered by the vendor, this is usually a series of code that is used to identify your affiliate ID, and any actions caused by this ID will be credited to this account later on. Usually you will need to apply for a ID as the first step.

2. Banner of logo file attached to this ID, the banners and logos are for visual comfort of human beings. There is no point to place a trackable, un-friendly code to a website that the readers don’t know what’s the hell it’s about.

3. A tracking system provided by the vendor or a 3rd party, the vendor must be able to tell which affiliate ID has generated how many clicks, download, payments, and when etc… A vendor (usually a big vendor) can choose to develop its own  or leave the tracking to a 3rd party system. If they go with 3rd party they will emphasize its neutrality etc….  As a affiliate marketer you won’t see this part of the system, all you should know is that a reliable tracking system must be in place so you do get paid fairly from the promotion work you’ve done.

4. Reporting system. It is to tell you how your marketing campaign goes. In any give hours or days, or weeks even months, how many clicks, how many downloads, how many payments that are result of your promotion.

With the above system in place, all you need to do now is to figure out how to effectively promote a product. I will continue to introduce some techniques in my next posts.
