Linksys RT31P2
Linksys RT31P2 is a broadband router with two phone ports and three LAN ports. The two phone jacks operate independently, like two phone lines. The built-in three LAN ports can connect three local PCs directly.
Step 1. Connect a PC to the Linksys RT31P2 to configure by the following steps
Connect Ethernent cable from a PC to one of the 3 LAN ports of Linksys RT31P2.
Connect a power cord to the Linksys RT31P2
Step 2. Verify that the PC obtains a valid IP address from Linksys RT31P2
Make sure that the PC’s Ethernet adapter is set to “Obtain an IP address automatically”. Because Linksys RT31P2 provides a DHCP server and enable DHCP in the default setting, the PC can obtain an IP address from Linksys.
Run ipconfig /renew in the DOS command mode on the PC. By this command, the PC will obtain an IP address
From the picture, we see the PC obtains an IP address 192.168.15.101 and the default gateway is 192.168.15.1. Then, the PC can access the Linksys RT31P2 by 192.168.15.1.
Step 3. Configure a simple setting of Linksys RT31P2
Linksys RT31P2 has a simple setting and an advanced setting. The simple setting has some important items, such as username and password. However, if we need to enable the NAT keep-alive feature, we have to configure the advanced setting. Step 3 shows how to configure the simple setting. The following Step 4 shows how to configure the advanced setting.
Open the browser on the PC and enter http://192.168.15.1/. When the login screen appears, enter “admin” for username and “admin” for password.
We shall see a setup page. Select the Internet connection type depending on how our ISP assigns an IP address. Normally, we choose “Obtain an IP automatically” in most cases.
Click on the main menu “Voice” and then click on “Line 1”, the simple setting page will appear. Fill in the highlighted fields. Please do not touch other default values.
Click the button “Save Settings” to save.
Step 4. Configure an advanced setting of Linksys RT31P2
Open the browser on the PC and enter http://192.168.15.1/Voice_adminPage.htm . When the login screen appears, enter “admin” for username and “admin” for password.
Click on “Admin Login” and then click on “advanced”

Click on the menu “Line 1”, the advanced setting page will appear. Fill in the highlighted fields. Please do not touch other default values.
Click on the menu “User 1”, the call forward setting page will appear. Fill in the highlighted fields to configure the voicemail feature. Please do not touch other default values.
Click the button “Save Settings” to save.
Step 5. Connect the Linksys RT31P2 to an Internet connection to use by the following picture
Plug the Ethernet cable into the WAN port of the Linksys RT31P2 to a router or an Internet connection.
Plug an analog telephone into the “Phone 1” port.
Connect the power cord to the Linksys RT31P2.
The Linksys RT31P2 will become ready after a few minutes.
